    • After Robert Francis Prevost became Pope Leo XIV and the first pontiff from the United States, an image spread across social media that claimed to show a New York Times headline saying he helped establish an autonomous zone for demonstrators protesting police brutality in 2020 in Seattle, Washington. This is false; the newspaper told AFP the supposed is fabricated and was never published on its website.

A fake New York Times front page, featuring a headline about the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin, circulated on social media on Monday, leading to confusion and misinformation. The fabricated image, which included a date of May 1, 2023, and a headline stating "Putin Is Dead," was shared widely on platforms like Twitter and Telegram, prompting the New York Times to issue a statement clarifying that the image was not a genuine edition of their newspaper. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of combating misinformation and the ease with which fake news can spread on social media, especially during times of heightened geopolitical tension.
