ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Siemens Instrumentation, Controls and Electrical (IC&E) North American group in Alpharetta, Georgia has been awarded several "first time" key project orders in the areas of alterative fuel generation, migrations of existing traditional generation, and the provision of new innovative technology for machinery vibration monitoring and protection. These U.S. projects will showcase the world class market talents of the Siemens SPPA-T3000 distributed controls system (DCS) and the SPPA-D3000 machinery monitoring and protection systems.

Empire Electric District's Stateline combined cycle power plant in Missouri will not only feature the migration of a WDPF II control system, but the replacement of an Ovation system as well. The project at Empire Electric District's Stateline Power Plant in Joplin, Missouri, involves the migration of a multi-shaft combined cycle power plant that will not only implement SPPA-T3000 as a plant-wide DCS, but it will also implement the SPPA-D3000 Combustion Dynamic Protection System on each of the gas turbines, as well as the innovative VIB-3000 machinery protection system. In addition, SPPA-T3000 will be used to replace an Ovation control system installed on a simple cycle, peaking gas turbine at the Stateline site, burning both natural gas and fuel oil. The upgrade of both units is scheduled for spring of 2012.

The second order is for a dual fuel conversion project for Termoflores CCPP in Barranquilla, Colombia. SPPA-T3000 will replace a one year old Ovation control system in order to efficiently convert the W501F gas turbine to dual fuel operation. With this migration the Termoflores power plant will now be more flexible with dual fuel operation and more environmentally friendly, as fuel gas is cleaner. This project will also be the first SPPA-T3000 reference on a gas turbine in Colombia.

The Northwest Energy Systems Company (NESCO) selected Siemens SPPA-T3000 as the plant DCS for both the Klamath Falls BioEnergy facility, in Klamath Falls, and the Oregon BioEnergy facility in Warm Springs Oregon. These projects represent the first coal fired boiler biomass projects in the U.S. for Siemens IC&E. The SPPA-T3000 DCS will be used to control the boiler, fuel handling and delivery systems, balance of plant systems, and also function as the main operations interface to the overall plant. Both facilities are planned for commercial operation by the end of 2013.

The Power Generation Company of Trinidad and Tobago selected Siemens IC&E SPPA-T3000 controls system to upgrade the turbine controls on ten ABB D11 combustion turbines at their Point Lisas Power Station located in Central Trinidad. Siemens was selected because of their superior offering that met the customer's specifications for improved availability and reliability of their units. The first of the ten unit upgrades achieved base load in mid-October 2011. Also to be installed on site is the SPPA-D3000 combustion dynamic monitoring system on their W501D5A gas turbines. The power plant and turbine control systems of these plants will be integrated into a single, easy-to-use platform, which in return will help optimize the operations and maintenance sequences.

GenOn's Marsh Landing Generating Station, a brown-field project in California, will be a 780 MW generating station consisting of four gas turbines in simple-cycle operation. GenOn chose Kiewit Power to engineer and construct the plant, whom in turn chose SPPA-T3000 as the plant DCS, integrating the turbine and plant controls into a single plant-wide platform. In addition to integrating the controls horizontally, Marsh Landing will be built with a totally integrated controls and electrical solution using an integrated Siemens Electrical/Controls solution using Profibus-DP and IEC-61850 to integrate all of the switchgear and MCC's using Smart communications technology. The plant is scheduled to go into operation in 2012.

The Siemens Energy Sector (NYSE: SI) is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for power generation in thermal power plants and using renewables, power transmission in grids and for the extraction, processing and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2011 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of EUR27.6 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR34.8 billion and posted a profit of more than EUR4.1 billion. On September 30, 2011, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 97,000. Further information is available at: [ www.siemens.com/energy ].
