Kent County is considering a plan to construct a new building and move the majority of its staff out of downtown Grand Rapids.

The Kent County Board of Commissioners is considering a plan to demolish and redevelop the former Grand Rapids Township Hall and Fire Station, located at 1836 East Beltline Avenue NE, into a new behavioral health crisis center. The facility, which has been vacant since 2017, would be transformed to address the growing need for mental health and substance abuse services in the area. The proposed crisis center aims to provide immediate care and support for individuals experiencing mental health emergencies, reducing the reliance on emergency rooms and jails. The project, estimated to cost around $15 million, is still in the early planning stages, with the county seeking community input and exploring funding options. If approved, construction could begin as early as next year, with the center opening its doors to the public in 2025.
