New Hampshire corrections commissioner abruptly resigns

The commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Corrections resigned abruptly Monday.
New Hampshire Corrections Commissioner Helen Hanks resigned on April 12, 2024, after serving for nearly three years, with her last day being May 6, 2024. Her resignation comes amidst ongoing issues at the state's prison system, including a federal lawsuit over the treatment of inmates with serious mental illnesses and a recent settlement regarding the use of solitary confinement. Hanks, who previously worked as a deputy commissioner and warden, expressed gratitude for her time in the role and the opportunity to serve the state. Governor Chris Sununu acknowledged her service and stated that a search for her replacement would begin immediately.
