Orangeburg Schools Seek Community Input for New Strategic Plan
Locale: UNITED STATES

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WRDW) - March 16, 2026 - Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) has launched a comprehensive initiative to develop a new five-year strategic plan, seeking significant input from the community it serves. The current plan is set to expire in 2027, prompting officials to proactively engage residents, parents, educators, and students in shaping the future of education within the county.
The development of this new strategic plan represents a pivotal moment for OCSD. It's not simply an update of existing policies, but a fundamental re-evaluation of priorities and a roadmap for ensuring every student has access to a high-quality education. The plan will address all facets of the school district - from curriculum and instruction to facilities, technology, and student support services - with the aim of fostering a thriving learning environment for all.
Superintendent Hatcher emphasized the importance of broad participation. "This is a journey that the entire community should be a part of," Hatcher stated. "We want to ensure we are meeting the needs of all our students, and that requires a broad spectrum of voices." This commitment to inclusivity marks a departure from top-down planning models, reflecting a growing national trend toward community-centered education.
The strategic planning process isn't limited to addressing current challenges; it's also about anticipating future needs. Experts predict significant shifts in the job market and the skills required for success in the coming years. OCSD aims to prepare students not just for college, but also for vocational training, entrepreneurship, and the rapidly evolving demands of the 21st-century workforce. This includes investing in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, promoting digital literacy, and fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
To facilitate community engagement, OCSD is hosting a series of public forums throughout the county. These forums will provide opportunities for residents to share their perspectives, concerns, and suggestions directly with school officials and the strategic planning committee. The forums are scheduled as follows:
- March 18, 6:00 PM, Orangeburg County High School
- March 22, 6:00 PM, Elloree Vocational Center
- March 25, 6:00 PM, Bowen-Campbell Elementary School
For those unable to attend the forums in person, an online survey is available at [ https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/OCSDstrategicplan ]. The deadline to complete the survey is March 21, providing a limited window for online participation. School officials are urging residents to take advantage of this opportunity to voice their opinions.
The district's website ([ https://www.orangeburg.k12.sc.us/ ]) serves as a central hub for information related to the strategic planning process. Visitors can find details on the plan's scope, timeline, key priorities, and opportunities for involvement. The site also features frequently asked questions (FAQs) and contact information for those seeking further clarification.
Beyond simply gathering input, OCSD is committed to demonstrating how community feedback will be incorporated into the final strategic plan. Officials have pledged to publish a summary of the survey results and forum discussions, along with a detailed explanation of how this input influenced the development of the plan. This level of transparency is crucial for building trust and ensuring the community feels genuinely heard.
The new strategic plan is expected to address key areas such as improving student achievement, closing achievement gaps, enhancing teacher quality, modernizing facilities, and strengthening community partnerships. It will also outline measurable goals and objectives, as well as a framework for monitoring progress and ensuring accountability. The success of the plan will depend not only on the quality of its content, but also on the sustained commitment of the entire Orangeburg County community. The district is hoping for a strong turnout at the forums and a high response rate to the online survey, demonstrating a collective dedication to the future of education.
