North Hero Breaks Ground on New Fire Station
Locale: UNITED STATES

NORTH HERO, Vt. - March 16th, 2026 - The town of North Hero, Vermont, celebrated a significant milestone today with the official groundbreaking ceremony for its new fire station. The project, years in the making, promises to dramatically improve the town's emergency response capabilities and provide a safer, more functional workspace for its dedicated volunteer firefighters.
The current fire station, a landmark structure built in 1958, has long served the community, but has increasingly fallen short of modern standards and the growing needs of the island town. Chief Mark Smith, speaking at the ceremony, explained that the facility's limitations were becoming critical. "We've outgrown our current station," he said. "It simply lacks the space to adequately house our equipment and, more importantly, doesn't offer a safe and comfortable working environment for our volunteers who put their lives on the line for our community."
The new station, estimated to cost approximately $1.5 million, represents a substantial investment in North Hero's public safety infrastructure. The project isn't simply about building a bigger building; it's a comprehensive upgrade designed to address numerous shortcomings of the existing facility. Plans detail a significantly larger building incorporating a dedicated training room - a critical addition for continuous improvement and adherence to evolving firefighting techniques. Updated equipment storage will ensure that vital tools are readily accessible and properly maintained, while vastly improved living quarters will offer firefighters a more comfortable and functional space to rest and prepare during extended emergency situations.
North Hero, situated on Grand Isle in Lake Champlain, faces unique challenges when it comes to emergency services. Its island location necessitates a well-equipped and readily available fire department to address not only structural fires, but also potential water rescues, vehicle accidents on the causeway, and seasonal issues related to tourism and outdoor activities. The improved infrastructure will enable faster response times and more effective operations, particularly crucial given the limited access points to the island.
Funding for the project has been secured through a collaborative effort involving state grants and local resources. Town Supervisor Gary Proper expressed his gratitude for the financial support. "We're incredibly grateful for the support we've received from the state and our residents," he stated. "This station isn't just bricks and mortar; it's a testament to our community's commitment to public safety and a reflection of the value we place on the service our volunteer firefighters provide." He also noted that securing funding involved a lengthy application process and demonstrated the dedication of numerous town officials and volunteers.
The construction phase is anticipated to take approximately one year, with the goal of opening the new station by early spring of 2027. During the construction period, the North Hero Fire Department will continue to operate from its existing location, with contingency plans in place to maintain uninterrupted service to the community. The town is working closely with the construction firm to minimize disruptions to residents and ensure the project stays on schedule and within budget.
Beyond the immediate benefits to the fire department, the new station is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the entire community. A modern, well-equipped fire department can contribute to lower insurance rates for homeowners and businesses, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. It also serves as a symbol of North Hero's forward-thinking approach to community development and its dedication to providing essential services for its citizens. The project also anticipates creating several temporary construction jobs during the building phase, boosting the local economy.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by firefighters, town officials, residents, and representatives from the state's emergency services agencies. The atmosphere was one of optimism and shared pride in the project, marking a new chapter for North Hero and its commitment to protecting its community.
