New York lawmakers approve bill allowing medically assisted suicide

The New York State Assembly passed a bill on May 2, 2023, that would allow terminally ill patients to request medical aid in dying, marking a significant step towards legalizing the practice in the state. The bill, known as the Medical Aid in Dying Act, would permit mentally capable adults with a terminal illness and a prognosis of six months or less to live, to request and self-administer medication to end their life peacefully. The legislation, which has been debated for years, now moves to the state Senate, where its passage is uncertain due to opposition from some lawmakers and advocacy groups. If approved by the Senate and signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul, New York would join ten other states and Washington, D.C., in offering this end-of-life option to terminally ill patients.
