Miami-Dade Approves $37.7M for Affordable Housing

Miami, FL - March 26, 2026 - In a unanimous decision on Tuesday, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved $37.7 million in funding for three new affordable housing developments, signaling a significant push to address the county's escalating housing crisis. Homestead Gardens, slated for 2901 NE 1st St. in Homestead, will add 93 units, addressing the growing need for affordable options in the southern portion of the county. Finally, Oasis West Miami, at 13955 SW 147th Ave. in West Miami-Dade, will contribute 110 units, expanding access to affordable housing in the rapidly developing western areas.
Commissioner Eileen Ziliotto, chair of the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, emphasized the importance of this investment. "This is a critical step in addressing the urgent need for affordable housing in our community," she stated. "For too long, working families and seniors have been priced out of our neighborhoods. These projects offer a lifeline, providing safe, stable, and affordable homes."
Beyond Bricks and Mortar: The Scope of Miami-Dade's Housing Crisis
The approval of these projects comes amidst a deepening affordability crisis in Miami-Dade County. A confluence of factors, including limited land availability, rising construction costs, increased demand from both domestic and international buyers, and a surge in short-term rentals, has driven up housing prices dramatically over the past several years. According to recent data from the Florida Housing Finance Corporation, the median home price in Miami-Dade County has increased by over 60% since 2020, while wages have not kept pace.
