Mike Anderson Steps Down After 30 Years Leading Berks Jazz Fest

READING, Pa. - For Mike Anderson, jazz isn't just music; it's a lifeblood, a cultural connector, and the driving force behind three decades of growth and impact at the Berks Jazz Fest. After 30 years at the helm, Anderson is stepping down as director of the annual festival held in Reading, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a legacy that has firmly established the event as a cornerstone of the local arts scene and a nationally recognized celebration of jazz music.

Anderson's passion for jazz began in childhood, nurtured by the sounds emanating from his father's record player. "Jazz was the first music I loved," Anderson explained. "Listening to my father play jazz as a boy opened my eyes to different cultures and people around the world." This early exposure sparked a lifelong connection, eventually leading him to pursue music himself. He initially learned to play the saxophone, a pursuit that took him to New York City to attend music school.

However, Anderson quickly realized that performing wasn't his true calling. "I came to understand that I wanted to share music with others," he said. "I didn't feel I was destined to play it, but I knew I wanted to be a part of it." This realization proved pivotal, shifting his focus from the stage to the organizational side of the music world. The desire to make music accessible and enjoyable to a wider audience became his guiding principle.

In 1994, Anderson was appointed director of the Berks Jazz Fest, and under his leadership, the festival experienced a remarkable transformation. What was once a relatively small local event blossomed into a multi-day extravaganza attracting over 20,000 attendees annually. Anderson's vision wasn't simply about booking big names, though the festival has consistently featured renowned jazz artists. It was about cultivating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere that resonated with the diverse community of Reading and beyond.

"Over the years, we've tried to be inclusive of people from all cultures and walks of life," Anderson stated. "We also aimed to create a place where people feel good - a comfortable, enjoyable environment for everyone." This commitment to inclusivity went beyond simply diversifying the artist lineup. Anderson actively sought opportunities to engage local schools and community organizations, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the festival.

The festival's success can also be attributed to Anderson's willingness to embrace different styles within the jazz genre. While honoring the tradition of classic jazz, he also championed contemporary forms and fusion styles, ensuring that the festival remained relevant and appealing to a broad range of musical tastes. This willingness to evolve, combined with a steadfast dedication to quality and artistic integrity, solidified the Berks Jazz Fest's reputation as a forward-thinking and dynamic event.

This year, Anderson will be handing over the reins, marking the end of an era for the festival. "It's been an incredible journey," he reflected. "But I know it's time to pass the torch." He has been working closely with the festival's board to identify a successor who will continue the tradition of inclusivity and artistic excellence that he has championed for three decades.

Anderson expresses his hope that the new director will build upon the foundations he has laid, ensuring that the Berks Jazz Fest continues to be a vibrant and welcoming space for music lovers of all backgrounds. "I want people to continue to feel like they're a part of the festival. I want people to continue to feel good," he said, emphasizing his enduring commitment to the community he has served for so long.

The 2023 Berks Jazz Fest will be held from August 6th to 12th, and promises to be a fitting celebration of Anderson's remarkable tenure and a look towards a bright future for the festival.
