  • Pockets of Cuba's capital Havana saw the lights flicker back on though vast areas of the city and country continued without electricity on Sunday morning, after a nationwide grid collapse that knocked out power to 10 million people.

Cuba has started the process of restoring electricity to Havana and its surrounding provinces following a significant power outage that affected the entire country. The blackout, which began on a Saturday, was attributed to a failure in the national electric system, as reported by Cuba's Electric Union (UNE). Efforts to bring the power back online commenced in the early hours of Sunday, with the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant in Matanzas being reactivated. This plant, along with others, had been undergoing maintenance, contributing to the power crisis. The restoration efforts are part of a broader challenge for Cuba, which has been dealing with frequent blackouts due to a lack of fuel, deteriorating infrastructure, and economic issues exacerbated by the U.S. embargo. Cuban authorities have acknowledged the difficulties and are working to stabilize the power supply, although the process is expected to be gradual.
