  • Three American citizens imprisoned for years by China have been released, the White House said Wednesday. The three are Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung. "Soon they will return and be reunited with their families for the first time in many years," the White House said in a statement.

The article from WTAE reports that two American citizens, Mark Swidan and Kai Li, who were detained in China, have been released from custody. Mark Swidan, a Texas businessman, was sentenced to death with a two-year suspended sentence in 2019 on charges of drug trafficking, which he and his family have denied. Kai Li, a California pastor, was detained in 2016 for allegedly stealing state secrets. Their release comes amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts between the U.S. and China to address the cases of detained nationals. The U.S. State Department has expressed relief over their release and continues to work on securing the freedom of other Americans detained abroad.
